Title: Manager, Engineering
What does an average workday look like for you?
I am lucky enough to start every day getting my young daughter out of her crib. Before work, I get to spend an hour with her reading books and singing songs before I clock in. My job is fully remote, so I am just in the next room while my mother looks after her. I start my day with checking emails and my calendars to orient myself with the daily priorities. I lead a stand-up with my team members so we can set the days objectives, address any blockers, and all start off on the same page. From there, it's a good mix of writing code, code reviewing my team's MRs, and meeting with stakeholders or other departments about ongoing projects.
When the day starts to wind down I like to check in with my team to make sure everyone is feeling good about what they've accomplished. Then I get to spend the night with my husband and my daughter. It may seem boring but it's the best part of my day.
What are you most proud of in your career, so far?
I have so much to be proud of, I am the definition of 'yes, women can have it all.' I started at my current company in 2019 as a junior software engineer. In these few short years I have gotten married, given birth to my daughter, battled and beat breast cancer while I was pregnant with her, been promoted all the way up to engineering manager, hired the best team possible, and
I am currently pregnant with my son. I've started and grown a beautiful family, nurtured a successful career, and even beat a life-threatening illness thrown into the mix.
What advice would you give other women wanting to reach their career goals in tech?
The best advice that I was ever given, and that I would pass along is learn how to loudly advocate for yourself. "No one will care about you like you care about you." You will absolutely encounter people that will try to hold you back. People will act like you don't belong, you most likely will be paid unfairly, You won't be provided access to leadership or management positions, it can be very frustrating to be taken seriously. Learn how to express those concerns in an articulate and meaningful way, and don't back down.
