Originally from Afghanistan, Dr Safia Barikzai is Associate Professor and Deputy Head of School in the School of Computer Science and Digital Technologies at London South Bank University (LSBU).

With a career spanning nearly three decades, Safia has dedicated herself to making computing education more accessible, inclusive, and impactful. She holds a PhD in Courseware Engineering and has taught and researched across the UK and Australia. Alongside her academic role, she served as LSBU’s Enrichment Lead for South Bank Academies, championing outreach into local communities, and has led Equality, Diversity and Inclusion efforts across the School of Engineering. She is also Chair of the BCSWomen Lovelace Colloquium — the UK’s leading academic event celebrating women in computing. Her work sits at the intersection of education, technology, and social equity — contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals in Quality Education, Gender Equality, and Reduced Inequalities.
