Your questions answered:

Q: What’s the difference between programming and coding?

A: In my experience they’re used interchangeably, however I would say Programming is more of a general view (coding, data structures, algorithms, problem-solving, etc) whereas coding is more syntax and language specific.

Q: What kind of certifications, projects and experiences are you looking for in candidates who are coming from a non-traditional background?

A: I can only talk from the perspective of where I work, however I would just be looking for someone who is actively taking it upon themselves to learn and improve, whether it be bootcamps, projects, or certifications. Just showing a willingness to learn and demonstrate what you’ve learnt is perfect.

Q: I’ve taken an online coding bootcamp but struggle to get interviews. How can I stand out among candidates with more traditional backgrounds?

A: As answered in the previous question, having a bootcamp is a good start but jumping in and doing more things like hackathons, small projects, etc, and showing a genuine passion and drive to learn will set you apart.

Q: What projects do you recommend to start within tech?

A: This depends on your current experience level, but I’d say good projects to start with would be a Weather forecast app as there are a lot of free APIs you can use for this and it covers difference problems you’d have to solve in a company for examples working with API. Another common one is a Todo list which can be as simple or as complicated as you want.
