Perks you only know about if you work at Lineup

Lineup sports day tug of war

ARTICLE SUMMARY

We spoke with Rob Hesmondhalgh, chief information officer, at Lineup about the perks that only the company’s employees know about.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT SOME OF THE PERKS YOU WILL EXPERIENCE WHEN WORKING AT LINEUP?

The one consideration of today’s modern remote workforce is that all-important in-person time, not the mandatory office days that some companies rolled out post-pandemic, but the nicer personal touches where we can meet up and socialise and get to know our new cohort a little better.

CHRISTMAS PARTIES

We use our Christmas parties as an opportunity to bring people together, strengthen relationships, and have fun. We try to involve everyone, even our European teammates in locations where we only have one or two staff.

SUMMER PARTIES/SPORTS DAYS

Why should fun be limited to festive gatherings? We invite the whole UK team to a summer sports day and picnic, and we combine this with London business meetings for our European team, so that as many of them as possible can be involved, too. This is not your average team building event!

ALL-HANDS MONTHLY GET-TOGETHERS

In the UK we hold this in a central London location once a month. Where we start with a formal segment with company updates, and we get teams to share what has been happening in their area. This is followed by collaborative working for people who don’t get to meet up normally. With food and drinks included those who can, usually stay on into the evening.

The US footprint is a little wider than in the UK, but we still have a virtual monthly get-together focusing on the US team and their achievements. We encourage audience participation in the style of a virtual show and tell giving ownership to employees at all levels.

Global Town Hall; We also have a monthly online meeting for the whole company to talk about how the company is doing, joiners, movers, and leavers’ successes, to thank people who have gone above and beyond, etc.

ONE-OFF COST OF LIVING PAYMENT

This year, in the challenging market we are all facing, we paid a one-off cost of living payment to all employees to help them with the sudden spike in bills, etc.

We try to invest as much money as possible back into our people. Again, in challenging times for everyone, this year we paid a very healthy salary increase and bonus to our employees.

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL SUPPORT

We use an external mental health consultancy that offers completely confidential counselling/coaching sessions with a designated mental health professional for all of our staff. Anyone can book a virtual session in confidence to discuss anything they wish. The uptake of these sessions is consistently strong.

We offer market-leading healthcare to all employees, which can be extended to family members, too.

FLEXIBLE WORKING – MAKING WORK, WORK FOR YOU!

We are mostly home-based. However, we surveyed our staff when the COVID restrictions ended to see who wanted to return to an office, and who wanted to WFH. We had a small number of people wishing to return to an office in London, so we opened up a 6-person office just for them!

If you have something to do that will stop you from working for an hour or so – dentist, school open day, plumber coming, etc – we don’t expect you to book time off. We trust our people and we know they sometimes do extra hours for us, so we don’t count the hours, we focus on the outcomes.

GIFTS AND MILESTONES

Whenever we know about an important life event (big birthdays, weddings, etc) we send gifts, cards, and best wishes from the company and the person’s team normally gets involved and does something nice, too!

We celebrate company anniversaries too We give a gift voucher for every year you have been with us, and for big anniversaries we do a shout-out on our People noticeboard. Team members also arrange electronic birthday cards for staff, from their team.

At Christmas, we send gifts to our staff around the world. In the past, these have included fancy chocolates from Hotel Chocolat, a selection box of wine, a Christmas food hamper, etc.

WE LISTEN, AND WE TAKE ACTION!

We regularly seek feedback from our people. This might be in team or company meetings, using online questionnaires and surveys (sometimes anonymously to encourage honesty), or in one-to-ones. What can we do differently? What can we do better? What should we do less of? And we always follow up with the information we have gathered and the actions we will be taking as a company. Clarity in communication is key.
