ARTICLE SUMMARY

Oana, CC&PO and co-founder of Dexory, takes a look at the STEM industry and we can break down the barriers for women in STEM.

Oana is CC&PO and co-founder of Dexory, a highly innovative service robotics and AI company based in Central London.

women in STEMWith a background in leading strategic partnerships at Google and developing innovative products at Telefonica, her career touched on various areas of the tech world, having found a sweet spot in designing, developing and bringing robots to the logistics industry to drive significant business value across all warehouse processes. She is very passionate about educating the world on the benefits and ethics of robotics as well as the importance of building unbiased AI.

In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, the importance of diversity cannot be overstated.

It’s been shown in countless studies that varied perspectives play a key factor in driving innovation and fuelling growth, with research finding companies with inclusive cultures are six times more innovative and agile. Yet, despite the advances we’ve made, there remains a significant gender gap in STEM industries, particularly in fields like robotics and AI. Addressing this gap is not just a matter of fairness; it’s crucial for the sustained growth and innovation of the industry.

The state of women in STEM

The gender gap in STEM fields is a well-documented issue. According to research, women make up only 29% of the STEM workforce in the UK. This disparity is even more pronounced in specialised areas like robotics and AI, where the numbers drop even further. The lack of female representation in these areas is not due to interest or ability, but rather systemic barriers discouraging women from pursuing these careers.

Diversity is more than a buzzword; it’s a fundamental driver of innovation. Best practices for women in hardware highlight how teams diverse in terms of gender, ethnicity, and background bring a wider array of perspectives and ideas to the table. This diversity fosters creativity and problem solving, leading to more robust and innovative solutions. In the tech industry, where rapid innovation is the key to staying competitive, having a diverse workforce is not optional – it’s essential.

Bridging the Skills Gap

Not only are STEM industries facing a gender gap, they’re also facing a significant skills gap, and these two issues go hand in hand. Over the past few years, we have seen advanced technology come on leaps and bounds and break through to the public consciousness. As these technologies become more integrated into various sectors, the demand for skilled professionals in these fields is skyrocketing. However, the supply of qualified candidates is not keeping pace. Encouraging more women to enter STEM fields is a critical part of the solution to this skills gap. By broadening the talent pool to include more women, we can better meet the industry’s growing demands.

Education is the foundation upon which careers in STEM are built. To encourage more women to pursue these fields, we must start early. Schools and universities should promote STEM subjects to girls from a young age, highlighting the exciting and impactful careers these fields can offer. Additionally, educational institutions should work to eliminate biases in STEM education and provide support for young women who show an interest in these areas.

Time to inspire the next generation

Overcoming the barriers women face when entering STEM roles requires not just recognition but creating inclusive opportunities for employment and investment. Inclusion is necessary for sustained growth and innovation. Being visible is important because women need to see themselves in the roles they aspire to, and it’s up to women leaders to pave the way for the next generation. Recognising the varied opportunities available in STEM and encouraging individuals to explore and contribute based on their unique skills and backgrounds is crucial.

From a business point of view, it is important for businesses to celebrate the achievements of their female workforce, as this will ultimately attract new talent into the industry. As the technology industry at large is competing for a finite pool of talent, it is in companies’ interest to make sure more women get interested and involved in the field from an early age.

To Conclude

Bridging the gender gap is not only a matter of equity, but a strategic imperative for the tech industry. By creating inclusive opportunities, inspiring the next generation, and addressing the systemic barriers women face, we can build a more innovative, dynamic, and successful industry.

The journey to a more inclusive STEM landscape is ongoing, and it requires the collective efforts of individuals, companies, and educational institutions. Together, we can break down the barriers holding women back and pave the way for a future where everyone has the opportunity to contribute to the groundbreaking advancements in technology.

For women looking to enter the field, it’s important you embrace your unique journey, stay true to your path, and understand the challenges you face are stepping stones to success. Don’t shy away from opportunities to learn, grow, and lead. Build and surround yourself with a supportive network, seek guidance from those who inspire you. And remember, your voice matters and the tech industry needs your perspective, creativity, and resilience.
