Coding

ARTICLE SUMMARY

n this video Masha Zvereva, Founder of Stereotype Breakers, shares why you don’t have to be technical to work in tech.

At SheCanCode, we are a fan of the vlogger, speaker, ex-Googler and founder of Stereotype Breakers, Masha Zvereva.

In this video, she discusses a stereotype that we often hear in our community – that you need to be technical, and know how to code, if you want to work in tech.

Masha uses this video to highlight the full range of roles available in the tech industry.

We’ve listed the roles below and just a few snippets, but she covers each one in full, including the expertise needed and any transferable skills that would be useful.

If you’re looking for your next role in tech, but you’re not a coder, here’s everything you need to know!

Project manager

Masha describes this role as: “Leading a team of different types of contributors, so you might have developers you might have designers, etc.”

Product manager

Masha notes that a project manager is more tactical than a project manager: “They look at the bigger picture planning, what the strategy for the product will look like and their job includes looking out for trends…”

UX designer and UI designer

UX designer stands for user experience designer and Masha notes that they take more of a holistic approach: “Not necessarily designing every single element every single button, but more concerned with what is the experience going to be like.”

A UI designer is “concerned with designing essentially what you see and what you interact with,” shares Masha.

Tech support

Tech support is responsible for making sure that an organisation’s IT is running smoothly. Masha highlights that this role is important to employees for “enabling them to be productive.”

Customer success

Masha notes these teams exist to ensure the customer is happy: “That everything is running smoothly and that they’re happy with the way this company’s software is working for them.”

Sales

We love the way that Masha describes the simplicity and importance of sales: “If you don’t make money with your software, with your product, with your company, then it’s not a business – it’s a hobby. So, you gotta make money.”

Technical recruiter

Again, another role that doesn’t require coding skills but, “technical recruiters need to be able to understand the needs of technical companies looking for technical talent,” says Masha.

HR

Masha notes that you can also be a recruiter within a tech company’s HR department: “The only difference here is that you might have more budget to play,” she says.

Marketing

Masha says this can be digital marketing, social media, marketing content strategy, or SEO “there are so many different things that tech companies need because they need to be able to sell and reach their customers.”

Legal

Masha says that when she worked at Google she came into contact with several legal teams, due to the nature of her work.

Finance

Masha describes the importance of this role perfectly: “Because these companies are making money and somebody needs to make sure that they’re spending it right…”
