My journey into tech started back in school, where I studied Computer Science at both GCSE and A-Level.
I then did a degree apprenticeship in software engineering for 4 years, gaining hands-on experience while studying. Since then, I’ve worked in the tech industry.
What does an average work day look like for you?
The main goal of every day is to code and work on delivering features with my team that bring value to our customers. While this remains the same, the tasks and problems that arise are always different.
There are opportunities to be creative in designing and creating software as well as making decisions on solutions based on understanding and communication with users. There isn’t just one way of achieving the goal!
The sense of accomplishment I get from writing software that’s deployed to users or supporting team members doing the same, knowing the greater, meaningful impact it can make, is a highlight that drives me everyday.
Have you ever faced insecurities and anxieties during your career, and how did you overcome them?
Imposter syndrome can be difficult when stepping into new challenges. Ways that I help this is by recognising my own achievements and keeping track of my growth and skills that I have built along the way.
Also, I try to encompass the idea of ‘be the change you want to see’ by supporting and encouraging those around me, sharing knowledge and experiences, and helping Gemba to foster an inclusive environment where everyone feels empowered to grow and succeed.
Entering the world of work can be daunting. Do you have any words of advice for anyone feeling overwhelmed?
- Try to see every experience, whether it’s a success or mistake, as a lesson that you can take forward into your career.
- Ask questions, technology can be broad and use cases differ massively. To learn and grow, understand what you are working on.
- Sometimes step back and see the bigger picture. Celebrate your progress and the small wins, the impact you’ve made, or your growth.
Any advice for women wanting to reach their career goals in technology?
- Finding mentors or people who can support and guide you throughout your career. Their encouragement can help you recognise your own strengths and ways to achieve the goals you set out.
- Taking the opportunity to speak to people across different teams and areas of the business as this really helps to gain new perspectives and ideas.
- Embrace new opportunities or change, get feedback, and take the chances when they arise.
