How did you land your current role? Was it planned?
Not at all! After 10 years in recruitment, I was looking for a change and a new challenge. I was approached by an MSP seeking someone to help develop their commercial arm. Five years later, with a steep learning curve, my passion for tech grew, and I realised this was the sector for me. The challenges it presents and how tech is woven into every business in such unique ways drove me to keep learning.
Having successfully built a full commercial team whilst spanning sales, marketing, client success, and delivery, I was then approached by Custodian Data Centres, a colocation provider for MSPs, cloud, enterprise, and digital entertainment organisations, to replicate that success. Having resold data centre space to our clients while at the MSP, was a challenge. It meant starting from scratch, developing a full marketing and sales strategy to drive growth, and ultimately shifting the business from a retail colocation offering to catering to enterprise-level clients with long-term contracts.
In short, it was all about following my passion, constantly seeking new challenges, and believing in the transferable skills I had within an industry I love. Being at Clean Energy Capital (CEC,) is the pinnacle for me. While sustainability is often talked about in tech, few companies truly embrace it as a core ethos. CEC offers me the best of both worlds: I’m fully immersed in the sector I’m passionate about, with a product portfolio that’s making a real difference to the world
Why did you choose your current expertise?
I was seeking an industry that never stands still, has unparalleled opportunity, keeps me engaged and continues to push boundaries, which is something I’ve found within the data centre sector. There are so many verticals within the industry, and I have been fortunate enough to have such a breadth of exposure within this, leading to my current role as Director of Data Centres for Clean Energy Capital. Being involved with such a forward-thinking company, run by leaders in innovation and renewable energy, has provided me with a deeper passion into an already exciting sector. With data centres, the options really are limitless in terms of how far opportunities can reach and what innovations can be unlocked.
Did you (or do you) have a role model in tech or business in general?
I’m delighted to see more women taking the lead in technology-based fields, with so many inspiring individuals serving as excellent role models for those within the industry and those looking to transition into tech. One person I want to particularly highlight is Dame Dawn Childs, the current Chief Executive of Pure Data Centres. She is an accomplished engineer and operator who was honoured with a Fellowship from the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2020 and appointed DBE in the 2023 New Year Honours list for her contributions to engineering, giving her plenty of achievements to admire. Having had the pleasure of spending an evening with Dawn, I can attest that not only has she accomplished remarkable feats throughout her career, but she genuinely cares about offering support and has shared invaluable insights into excelling in one’s career. Lauren Ryder, the Chief Experience Officer at Leading Edge Global and also a Senior C-Level executive at Leading Edge Data Centres, is another individual I feel compelled to mention as a role model. She radiates energy and excitement and stands out as a prominent industry leader and transformation specialist, exuding enthusiasm for her field. Lauren also possesses a wealth of knowledge and encouragement for fellow women in tech, whether it’s advice on how to travel with a capsule wardrobe or how to successfully command a room.
What are you most proud of in your career, so far?
Just recently, we secured a record-breaking deal with a well-known hyperscaler for Clean Energy Capital, which has been a real career high due to the sheer volume of the deal, combined with the sustainability focus powering it. I’m also particularly proud of a podcast I helped to create called The Female Front, a female-focused outlet looking at strong, successful and determined women within business sectors that are historically male-dominated, like the Tech space. On the podcast, the guests speak of their first-hand powerful stories of Females leading, removing the stigma attached to their industries. Guests include Tech, Investment Banking, Wealth Management, Construction, Engineering and many more. I’m looking forward to focusing on this platform more in 2025 and exploring further sectors featuring women leading the way. Having a platform to set a precedent for true diversity in a predominately male-dominated arena and being recognised for my contributions has been a highlight for me.
What does an average workday look like for you?
There are no two days the same, which is what I love most! A typical day largely consists of client engagement, working to develop technical scope, and liaising with all elements of our business including, land, finance, and senior leadership. It all takes a great deal of planning, meetings and talking to deliver the very best solutions for our business.
Are there any specific skills or traits that you notice companies look for when you’re searching for roles in your field?
Competency, technical acumen, and a hands-on approach will always be key traits we look for within the tech industry, particularly within start-up situations like at Clean Energy Capital. I’ve also found through my experience that many requirements fall outside of a job spec and can’t really be detailed on paper, such as being a true team player and of course in my role the hunter instinct is integral.
Have you ever faced insecurities and anxieties during your career, and how did you overcome them?
Yes, I’d be lying if I said self-doubt never creeps in—it’s only natural. But there’s a quote that always helps ground me: “Remember when you dreamed of being where you are now.” It’s a powerful reminder to appreciate how far I’ve come.
When I first started in tech over a decade ago, I had big ambitions, but I never imagined the journey would take me where it has. I dreamed of working closely with clients, being asked to speak at events I once admired, participating in panel discussions where my voice was heard and respected, and representing women on our board.
My advice? Stay grounded, don’t let insecurities take hold, and keep pushing forward. Amazing things truly do happen when you believe in yourself and stay committed.
What advice would you give other women wanting to reach their career goals in technology?
Never look at yourself as the minority, you are bringing a valued skillset and deserve a seat at the table. Continue to learn, develop your skillset, sometimes knowledge that you felt could never be relevant suddenly presents an opportunity to shine. And finally, remember there is another looking up to you to lead the way for them to take inspiration.
