Alison Harding has more than 20 years’ experience in sales management across many different business categories such as mobile, online and publishing.

How did you land your current role? Was it planned?

When I was interviewing for the role at Lotame I was actually also interviewing with Meta at the same time. Lotame made me an offer first, so I had to make a tough call. Taking the offer in hand rather than gambling on the slower process turned out to be a really smart move – I have no regrets!

What are the key roles in your field of work, and why did you choose your current expertise?

Sales teams are often split into two groups: sales and account management, or ‘hunters’ and ‘fielders’ as they are commonly known. But in my mind, you have to be a bit of both to succeed. I’m a natural hunter though.

Did you (or do you) have a role model in tech or business in general?

I wouldn’t single out anyone in particular but I take inspiration from all around me; I’ve been highly motivated by female leaders in our industry, especially those juggling kids, careers, and everything else in between.

What are you most proud of in your career, so far?

I was recently runner-up in ExchangeWire’s Ad Tech Personality of the Year Awards. I didn’t even think I would make the top five! But being recognised in this way is a real reminder that you can keep growing and contributing, and still stay true to who you are both inside and outside of the workplace.

What does an average work day look like for you?

As clichéd as it might sound, adtech never stands still, so no day is ever the same as another. There’s always something new to learn, new challenges to tackle, and brilliant people to partner with. It’s easy to underestimate the human side of the job, but building relationships, listening, and collaborating is what keeps everything moving forward – and makes working in this industry so enjoyable.

Are there any specific skills or traits that you notice companies look for when you’re searching for roles in your field?

I believe strongly that organisations should recruit for attitude and train for skill wherever possible. If people have a strong work ethic, are honest and eager to learn, then they will go a long way.

Has anyone ever tried to stop you from learning and developing in your professional life, or have you found the tech sector supportive?

I can honestly say I’ve always found the tech industry supportive. It moves fast, so it’s important to get involved in groups that support women in the industry, such as Bloom, Adtech Chats, Digital Leading Ladies and The Women in Programmatic Network. Being part of networks like these helps you to grow, learn, and connect with amazing people from every part of the industry.

Have you ever faced insecurities and anxieties during your career, and how did you overcome them?

Imposter syndrome affects us all. I try to recognise and reframe negative thoughts, make sure I properly celebrate my accomplishments, and if I need to talk I have a trusted support system. Don’t hold things in.

Entering the world of work can be daunting. Do you have any words of advice for anyone feeling overwhelmed?

Your physical and mental health should always come first, so always take the time you need to recharge and reset. If you prioritise tasks using a to-do list or time-blocking techniques, then you can stop yourself from getting too overwhelmed.

What advice would you give other women wanting to reach their career goals in technology?

Stay curious, be visible and keep learning!
