Lavinia D. Osbourne, Founder and CEO of Women in Blockchain Talks

ARTICLE SUMMARY

Lavinia D. Osbourne is an established agent for change in blockchain, and an entrepreneur at the vanguard of NFT development, as well as a futurist for the emergent web3 space.

She is the first person in the world to be granted a proprietary injunction by the courts of England and Wales for her two stolen Boss Beauties NFTs (Osbourne v. Persons Unknown), establishing case law and setting a legal precedent that now has a direct impact on the way NFTS are viewed legally, as well as in regards to tax and insurance purposes.

Through her work at WiBT, she has won and been nominated for accolades such as the Cogx Gender Equality Leader Award, National Diversity Award for Community Organisation and Best Diversity Resource/Initiative Award; whilst as an individual, she is one of Wirex’s Rising Women in Crypto 2021, a TechWomen100 winner and a 2021 LinkedIn Top Voice in Tech & Innovation.

Combining her passionate belief in blockchain’s egalitarian ideals with a commitment to utilising her knowledge, connections, and entrepreneurial spirit to bring opportunity for all, Lavinia works tirelessly to break down barriers by raising underrepresented voices.

WE CAUGHT UP WITH LAVINIA TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT HER JOURNEY INTO TECH, BEING A FEMALE ENTREPRENEUR, AND HER ADVICE FOR OTHER WOMEN IN TECH.

HOW DID YOU LAND YOUR CURRENT ROLE? WAS IT PLANNED?

My current role was not planned but it was created. Entrepreneurship gives those who choose it the wings to to fly and play the game of wealth creation on their own terms.

In regard to what I do is I would say I am a caretaker of the brand that is Women in Blockchain Talks, meaning to say that my objectives are to grow the community, provide different types of opportunities to my community, spotlight global women in blockchain and promote diversity and inclusion in the web3 and metaverse.

WHAT ARE THE KEY ROLES IN YOUR FIELD OF WORK, AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR CURRENT EXPERTISE?

There are many roles in the blockchain space that a person can take on from developer, tokenomics, business developer, product manager to community manager, CEO, CFO and Founder.

My role falls under community Founder and CEO with a lot of community leadership and business development. My expertise however, is coaching and mentorship. Helping people to become the best version of themselves. A big part of this is public speaking and education

DID YOU (OR DO YOU) HAVE A ROLE MODEL IN TECH OR BUSINESS IN GENERAL?

Yes, I do. I have many. The many women leading in Blockchain technology and Web3 are my role models. But if I had to choose one person I would have to say it is Serena Williams. I love how she has pivoted into the world of venture capitalism and is using her influence to support women entrepreneurs.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF IN YOUR CAREER, SO FAR?

The thing I am most proud of is my tenacity to stay in the entrepreneurship course, as well as the community I have built and the people I have helped, supported and inspired action in it.

WHAT DOES AN AVERAGE WORK DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?

It can range from answering emails, sending emails to speaking on podcasts and delivering mini classes on various subjects to meeting with my team, following up with sales calls and attending events to speak at, as well network at events both in the UK and aboard.

HAS ANYONE EVER TRIED TO STOP YOU FROM LEARNING AND DEVELOPING IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, OR HAVE YOU FOUND THE TECH SECTOR SUPPORTIVE?

The tech sector is very supportive, especially blockchain but sometimes it isn’t about learning and developing but applying the new found skills in a way where you can have a lucrative career. Sometimes in a burgeoning space like blockchain, you have to create it for yourself.

HAVE YOU EVER FACED INSECURITIES AND ANXIETIES DURING YOUR CAREER, AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?

All the time. Growing and adapting to new scenarios comes with its insecurities. If I am honest I face them and overcome them through, speaking with my supporters, sleeping and just by taking action. If I fail, I fail!

ENTERING THE WORLD OF WORK CAN BE DAUNTING. DO YOU HAVE ANY WORDS OF ADVICE FOR ANYONE FEELING OVERWHELMED?

Yes! Breathe! And know that you have a 100% record of overcoming your challenges. This moment you are in, too shall pass.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE OTHER WOMEN WANTING TO REACH THEIR CAREER GOALS IN TECHNOLOGY?

Don’t listen to the statistics. Be aware of them but don’t let me dictate your choices. Alternatively, be your own statistic and where you can get a mentor or join a community where you can surround yourself with like-minded people who will show you what is possible.
