YOU HAVE BEEN AT FARFETCH ONLY A FEW MONTHS SO FAR – WHAT HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE BEEN SO FAR?
I started at FARFETCH a few months ago, and this has been an exciting journey since day one! During my onboarding, in the first weeks, we were introduced to our values, the offices, and what is done by each team in the company. During this time, one could easily understand the emphasis FARFETCH gives to its values, how it cares about its employees, and how each person’s job is meaningful.
So far, I have had the opportunity to learn while being accompanied and advised during my learning progress. I feel included, participating in meetings and team activities. I have also realized how people care about giving and receiving feedback: at FARFETCH, there is always space to grow and learn. So far, I am happy to be part of this company.
CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR CAREER JOURNEY AND HOW IT BROUGHT YOU TO FARFETCH?
FARFETCH has always been in my mind as a company I was truly interested in. I studied Biomedical Engineering. During my last two years of study, I did a master’s in Medical Informatics. Specifically, I developed apps for an internship and thesis the previous year. During my academic journey, I got involved in different activities (volunteering, youth associations, and mentoring, among others), being very proactive and interested in broadening my knowledge beyond school subjects. As such, in my last year of school, I applied to a FARFETCH program called “Mentoring for Girls.”
This program pushed me to start my career at FARFETCH. During this program, I was assigned a mentor who had some things in common with me, such as my school background, my tech work experience (since my mentor was part of the mobile team at FARFETCH), and the fact that we both are women in tech. Having these things in common, it was easier to relate, seek and share advice.
My last year of university was a pivotal moment to take career steps. FARFETCH seemed to be an innovative company, an excellent place to learn, a company that cares for employees and delivers a quality product to its clients. In conversations with my assigned mentor, I was getting more and more confident about it. So, I ended up applying to another FARFETCH program: the FARFETCH Plug-In Graduates and got in.
NEW TO FARFETCH, WE UNDERSTAND YOU’VE HAD A WHIRLWIND OF A START WITH LOADS OF EXCITING ACTIVITIES TAKING PLACE. HAVE YOU JOINED ANY NEW GROUPS OR INITIATIVES?
The company stands out for the many initiatives and activities organized for and by the employees. Amongst others are yoga classes, lunches and snacks at the office, and people communities driving our diversity and inclusion strategy, such as the Women in Business Network. Although I have yet to join one, I can already comprehend their work’s importance.
Another initiative that gets my full attention is that employees can bring their dogs to the office. I can’t wait to meet my colleagues’ pets.
HOW HAS FARFETCH WORKED TO INTEGRATE YOU INTO THE TEAM? DID YOU HAVE A MENTOR?
I am currently on FARFETCH as a Plug-In Graduate. As such, I was assigned a mentor that closely follows my learning progress and is available to clarify my questions. Also, my learning path is adjusted accordingly to my feedback.
As for the integration part, I feel like everybody makes me feel comfortable, making themselves available to clarify in any way my doubts. After our onboarding week, where I had the opportunity to learn more about the business, our culture and different teams, I got to know the office and connected with the team physically, taking advantage of all the office perks which helped break the ice. FARFETCH has, in general, a very welcoming environment.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR OUR READERS WANTING TO APPLY FOR A ROLE AT FARFETCH? TIPS TO STAND OUT?
Verifying if the technical or complex skills align with the role you want to apply for is essential. However, I would say, for a company like FARFETCH, culture has an important part to play. FARFETCH does care about practising its values – Think Global, Be Human, Todos Juntos (All Together), Amaze Customers, Be Brilliant.
These are not just pretty words but ways of working and a mindset that will guide you and help you throughout your journey. How you communicate and deal with people is very important, and so is your ambition to go further and get better, improving your and your team’s results. Be curious, ask questions, explore and learn. Don’t be afraid of being different or doing what’s never been done.
