The role

This role is an exciting opportunity to lead several agile teams within the Nuke product team.

As Engineering Manager for Nuke, you will closely collaborate with Lead Engineers and Product Managers to define release schedule and scope, manage interdependencies, and deliver software that meets business requirements, while keeping the business aware of the progress by defining, tracking and delegating appropriate KPIs.

Working with the Lead Engineers and their teams, you will help define and implement a strategy for onboarding, upskilling and knowledge sharing and dissemination across the Nuke team, helping us to develop the next generation of technical experts.

You will be responsible for go/no-go decisions on internal team process, resource allocation and deployment, while advising and influencing the Director of Nuke Engineering on decisions that may impact the wider team, business and deliverables, such as technical concerns and changes of direction.

As part of your product-wide responsibilities, you will contribute with the Director of Product and other Nuke leaders on defining the long-term roadmap and technical strategy for the product. By collaborating with leaders across Timeline and Compositing Engineering teams and Nuke’s Architecture team, you will have a detailed technical overview of all current projects, and will help to provide guidance, identify and mitigate risk, and identify opportunities for innovation and collaboration.

With other Nuke leaders, you will be liaising with clients, helping to present our product vision and progress on our roadmap, as well as supporting them with issues that they are experiencing now, and requirements for future updates. You will also help to drive collaboration with hardware and software partners, facilitating mutually beneficial projects.

You will collaborate with other Engineering Managers and leaders at Foundry to drive company-wide initiatives aligned with Foundry’s vision and objectives.

  • Experience of real-world, pragmatic, Agile processes, and 2+ years of building and managing an engineering team

  • Knowledge of VFX domain, tools and industry to inform the technology strategy required to deliver annual product roadmaps and our long-term vision

  • Creative approach to problem solving, great analytical skills and engineering fundamentals

  • Experience of managing the entire Software Development Life Cycle, from conception through roadmap planning, development, and QA over multiple release cycles

  • Good understanding and practical experience of C/C++ development

  • Experience of cross-OS development for macOS, Linux and Windows

  • Good communication skills, well organised, good time management, as well as negotiation skills enabling an effective means to deal with conflicting interests

BENEFICIAL.

  • 3D, OpenGL, and experience of geometry, lighting, and rendering

  • Experience of Qt for cross-platform desktop development

  • Experience of authoring high-performance scientific software

  • At least 5 years experience of hands-on commercial software development

  • Experience of Python for application development

  • Knowledge of scripting (bash, Lua, Python)

  • Experience of developing larger-scale desktop applications with plug-in facilities, including maintenance and refactoring, taking into account compatibility constraints

  • Leading several software development teams by monitoring and guiding the team to deliver software to the specified level of functionality and at high quality

  • Collaborate closely with Product Management and other Nuke leaders to drive decisions about scope and phasing of work

  • Ensure good engineering practice and process within the teams and that development activity aligns with the company technology standards, principles, architecture and roadmaps

  • Facilitate and coordinate cross-team collaboration on projects, as well as providing technical insight and directions

  • Responsible for acquisition and management of talent within the team by determining the need for training and talent development

  • Contribute to process, infrastructure, and technology improvements to further the goals of the business

  • Create and maintain a professional culture within the team, where individuals take ownership and accountability on delivering excellence, quality and value for the customer and business

  • Drive continuous learning and improvement across your teams by leveraging mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow through encouraging curiosity, experimentation and innovation

  • Be accountable for the engagement, performance and professional growth of your team members, holding your Lead Engineers accountable for the same within their teams
