ARTICLE SUMMARY

Always dreamt of becoming a Data Scientist? Not sure what it takes or where to start? We've put together this handy guide to give you a headstart!

In this series, SheCanCode takes a look at what qualifications and skills are needed for roles across the tech industry. We will also look at earning potential and the prospect of career growth as a software engineer, as well as pointing you in the right direction of companies and open job roles.

What is a Data Scientist?

A Data Scientist is an analytical specialist, responsible for collecting, analysing and interpreting data. This data is then turned into meaningful information that companies can use to improve their businesses.

Data is extracted from a range of sources, using algorithmic, data mining, artificial intelligence, machine learning and other statistical tools.

Data Science is in popular demand, with companies facing ever more big data, hoping to extract useful information from it and make decisions.

Qualifications

Employers like to see academic credentials, such as an undergraduates degree. Typically, a degree in Data Science, Computer Science or Mathematics is a great path to take.

Got your degree in hand? You can also boost your skillset and experience by completing a course in machine learning, programming or big data software. Below are just a few courses to stand you in good stead:

Skills

As you’ve probably already discovered, a career in Data Science requires an incredibly analytical brain. You’ll also need to have great problem solving skills.

Communication skills are also very important, as they allow you to explain data analysis to those who don’t have the same in-depth knowledge.

Problem solving is critical as you can’t be a data scientist without the desire to solve problems. You will have to identify potential issues and come up with the most effective solutions.

Earning potential and career growth

The average base salary in the UK is around £40,000 per annum. This can vary from your level of experience, but a Lead Scientist can earn upwards of £60,000 to over £100,000 per annum.

In terms of growth, you could start your data career as a Data Analyst or Junior Data Scientist and work your way up to Senior, Lead, or Principal Data Scientist roles.
