Over the last decade, data shows a significant rise in the presence of women in the games industry – across the workforce, in the gaming community, and as playable characters. This has played a crucial role in how women are supported. However, there is still more that needs to be done. Ensuring the presence of support systems for women in male-dominated environments should be the next step. But how can we do this?

When operating in a workplace dominated by men, developing a robust strategy can help you to stand out. It is important not to be afraid to speak up or to feel inferior simply because you are in a minority.

Strategies require setting clear goals and priorities, which can guide you in focusing on areas that add value during conversations or meetings. It’s important to feel confident in sharing your ideas and perspectives, as your input can make a meaningful contribution.

Networking can also play a crucial role in building a support system. Having conversations with similarly or more experienced colleagues will help grow your confidence and knowledge base, better equipping you for daily interactions.

Building a large network of any type could benefit you by providing a space to discuss topics that are related to the industry or how to deal with more challenging situations. By fostering a broad circle of colleagues of any gender, you will have a strong support system to lean on who can understand your struggles, offering strength and encouragement.

By striving to educate and inspire others, you can boost your confidence and reinforce trust in your abilities. Sharing your expertise not only bolsters your own assuredness, but also broadens the skillsets and knowledge of your colleagues. The empowerment which comes from this exchange is also beneficial as it creates a more positive and trusting work environment.

Seeking multiple certifications throughout your career journey is essential to developing new insights, thus keeping up to date with the industry. Gaming is rapidly growing; every year, new software, techniques and powerful machines are launched, making it vital to stay informed, adaptable and continuously engaged with emerging trends and technologies.

The final key element which women need in a male-dominated work environment is resilience. When challenges arise, avoid feeling demotivated or consumed by negative experiences. Use these obstacles as opportunities to learn and grow.

Above all, it is critical to believe in your own abilities. Don’t be afraid of shining and standing out, even when in a minority. You know your value, so be confident in your ability to thrive where you are. By harnessing your skills, knowledge and expertise, you can build a support system to ensure you will not face these challenges alone.
