ARTICLE SUMMARY

A network for women in tech in the North East has launched to connect women working in the region.

The Women in Tech North East network aims to support those who identify as women in the region and is open to those in digital or technology roles, women studying computing or digital courses or those that have a general interest in tech.

Women make up around 21% of digital jobs within the North East, according to the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics.

The group was originally started as a social media community, but due to its popularity amongst women in the North East of England, the network will now host in-person events.

The network has been founded by a group of women who champion technology work in the region, including Professor Sue Black, from Durham University, Melanie Dunnett, from Newcastle University, Elena Gorman, of Qrious, Rachel Pattinson, from Newcastle University and Kathryn Wharton, of Monstarlab.

Professor Sue Black, Professor of Computer Science and Technology Evangelist at Durham University, set up the national BCSWomen group in 1998.

Discussing the Women in Tech North East launch she said: “Having been based in the region for nearly four years, I’ve been excited by the buzz in the tech scenes. It’s an incredible region, with so many people who are changing the world through tech.”

“It’s time the North East had a network to support and catalyse the trajectories of the incredible women in tech.
