Spotlight shined on incredible women in tech in 2023 New Year Honours List

This year’s New Year Honours List has shined a spotlight on some of the incredible women in tech.

Anisah Osman Britton, Founder of 23 Code Street, a coding school for all women, was awarded an MBE for services to Diversity in the Technology Sector. Elizabeth Scott, Client Engagement Director, Tech Nation, also received an MBE for services to the Technology Sector.

Rebecca George, former President of the British Computer Society (BCS), was awarded an OBE for services to Diversity in the Technology Profession. Beverley Gower-Jones, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Carbon Limiting Technologies, awarded an OBE for services to Net Zero Innovation. Carolyn Dawson, CEO of Founders Forum – the organiser of London Tech Week. She has also received an OBE for her services to technology and digital media.

Professor Gillian Wright, Director of UK Astronomy Technology Centre, has received a CBE for services to astronomy. Alongside her position as Director, Gillian also has a leading role in development and construction of the James Webb Space Telescope. This is considered the most powerful telescope ever launched into space.

Libby Jackson, the UK Space Agency’s Head of Space Exploration, was also awarded an OBE, for services to the Space Sector. The UK Space Agency honoured Libby for working to raise the profile of women in 2014. She also helps to encourage young people to consider studying and working in STEM.

Wonderful honour

Speaking about the honour, Libby says, “It’s a wonderful honour to be recognized for my work in this way, particularly by my peers across the UK Space Agency and government.”

“Nothing happens in isolation and it’s only because I have worked with such an outstanding and talented set of people through the years that this has happened.”

“I would like to thank them and pay tribute to their work.”

“I have got here by doing what I enjoy, and I would always encourage young people to follow their passion.”

“I hope this shines a light on the space sector and the amazing opportunities available to people.”

What is the New Years Honours List?

The New Year Honours List 2023 marks the incredible public service of individuals from across the UK. The committee has awarded recipients in the list for their outstanding contributions across all parts of the UK. This is for their work on areas including sustained public service, youth engagement and community work.
